Why should I use a baby sling? There are numerous benefits to “wearing” your baby. Slings are comfortable for babies, quick to put on and easy to use. Please read through our Papoose Guide to learn more about the benefits of babywearing and how to get the most out of the Posh Papoose® Baby Sling. Even if you don’t buy ours, we hope you find a comfortable method to wear your baby! Many people end up owning a sling (or two!) in addition to other types of baby carriers. Anyone who carries a baby or toddler in his or her arms will be a lot more comfortable with a sling! It will free up your arms. The babies benefit cognitively and emotionally from the intimacy and movement. You can read more in our Papoose Guide. What age baby is it appropriate for? The Posh Papoose® Baby Sling can be used right away with a new baby, even a preemie, though check with your doctor first. Most people find they reach their limits of physical comfort when the child is around 25 lbs or so. Depending on the age of the child, you can use the Posh Papoose™ in different ways at different ages. I have carried my 30 lb. four-year-old in a sling, not very enthusiastically, I must admit, but it can be done. You can see different age babies and kids in various photos in the catalog. How does the Posh Papoose® compare to other slings and carriers? You can read our pros and cons list and compare the Posh Papoose® to other baby carriers. The Posh Papoose® is offered in a collection of beautiful and unique fabrics, most of which you won't find elsewhere. Our long tail of the sling offers greater adjustability and versatility than a “closed-tail” sling. We added a sectioned pocket so that you can carry the essentials without needing a waist pack or purse. You can custom order it as an unpadded sling. Also, unlike some of the models that carry the baby on the hip and can only be used with a 6 month old and older, the Posh Papoose® is great for newborns, but you can also carry a lightweight 4-yr old if necessary. We now offer matching hats, t-shirts, and blankets so you can put together a great gift set for expecting parents. The Posh Papoose® lightly padded baby sling also garners some of the best reviews in the padded sling category at various websites (babywearer.com, theopinionatedparent.com, natural-jewishparenting.com, mommieswithstyle.com). Is there an advantage to one fabric over another? The cotton prints are stylish, hide stains, are lightweight, breathable and comfortable. Cotton will wrinkle a bit with use, but makes a great everyday sling. Cotton-poly blends tend to be more wrinkle resistant and are lightweight. Lightweight denim is also wrinkle resistant and hides stains. Silk douppioni is super lightweight, wicks moisture better than cotton, is breathable, strong, and gorgeous, but it will get a little fuzzy with use. It’s a very elegant fabric. How often do you add new fabrics and new products? Twice a year we attend fabric shows but we add new fabrics continually throughout the year. Check the site often to see what’s new. Can I share it with my significant other? Only if you want to! As long as one of you isn't 4'11" and other person 6'4", you should be able to share. If there is a big height discrepancy, and you may find our standard size model isn't long enough for the taller partner, let us know so we can make you an extra-long version. Because our slings adjust at the rings, you should be able to tighten or lengthen the sling as you need. It only takes seconds. If I’m in Los Angeles, will you show me how to use it or can I buy from you directly? Yes, please contact us to make an appointment. California residents are subject to 8.25% sales tax. Can I use it in a cold climate? Yes, but you may find an unpadded sling works best if you plan to wear it under a heavy coat. Sometimes the hood of a winter jacket gets stuck when you put the sling on, but it’s not a big deal to move it out of the way. It can be tricky to get a baby in a bulky snowsuit into a sling, however. Cold-weather customers, what do you think? I’ll post your tips here! Can I use it in a hot climate? Yes, our cottons and silks are very breathable. Be sure to put sunscreen on your 6 month old or older baby and don’t overdress the baby, as your body generates plenty of heat, especially in warm seasons. Silk wicks moisture more efficiently than cotton. We now offer terrific sun hats that have big brims for plenty of shade. If you have a young baby and you’re not that tall, you can use the tail of the sling to shade the baby, as long as it doesn’t make the baby too hot. If your baby gets very red and sweaty, it might be too hot in there. How long will the sling last? If you keep in it good shape, the sling should last for several years. Keep in mind that sun and frequent wash cycles will fatigue and weaken fabric fibers over time. Please periodically check your well-used sling for small tears or holes. No one has ever reported a sling that didn’t last and we’ve been selling them since 2002. If your sling needs a repair, we will evaluate and repair it for a nominal cost. If it is beyond repair we will offer you a discount on a replacement. Can I nurse my baby in the sling? The Posh Papoose® baby sling is a great way to breastfeed discreetly no matter where you are! There is no need to spend money on a nursing cover-up if you have a sling! It helps if you're wearing a top made for breastfeeding, but it isn't necessary. You can hold the baby in the cradle hold or a football position. You might want to loosen the sling a little bit at the rings. You can use the tail of the sling as a cover-up. I've nursed my baby in the Posh Papoose® in restaurants, movie theaters, stores, parties, and the beach, and probably a zillion other places. For more details, please review the How to Nurse in a Sling section. Is it just one size? Mine seems too short / too long. Our slings are designed to fit most people. Make sure you are wearing the sling properly before deciding the length isn’t good. Also, the length of the sling varies depending on how you are carrying the baby. The Cradle position uses more fabric than the Upright or Hip Carry. If the tail hangs too low, you can tie it up to the rings using the attached ties. You can review the section on Sling Size for more size details. Also, we try use models of different sizes, so please peruse the sling section of our catalog to see how the sling fits people of different heights and sizes. I can tell you the height of different models if you would to know details. We can make a custom size for you. Contact us for more details. I tried a sling once and my baby hated it. Will it be different with the Posh Papoose®? I can't promise your baby will love it, but I will say that it's important to give it a chance. I believe that if your baby likes to be held or carried, then there’s no reason he or she wouldn’t like being carried in a sling. Make sure everyone is comfortable when you start. To maximize success, put the baby in the sling after she or he has been changed and fed. My baby would go in screaming, but I'd just head out the door and by the time I'd walked a block, she'd be fast asleep. Most new babies love the feeling of being swaddled, they are soothed by motion of your body, and they love being that close to mom or dad. Have some patience and see if your baby gets used to it. Most of them love it. It's just like being in your arms, but with a little fabric hammock instead. Some people recommend putting the baby in when he or she is calm, three times a day, for three weeks before throwing in the towel. There is a good chance that by then, the baby will get used to it and enjoy the experience. Some young babies are much happier in an upright, inward-facing tummy-to-tummy position than in the cradle position. When babies are 3 – 5 months, they might prefer facing outwards. Most babies and toddlers enjoy being carried seated on your hip. So please try different positions and don’t give up. If your baby doesn’t like it as a newborn, it’s quite likely going to be a different story at 6 months, when he or she can sit on your hip and see the world. Make sure you are wearing it properly. Comfort can also make a big difference to you and your baby. The sling isn’t comfortable. Make sure that when you are wearing the sling, it looks similar to the models on this website. Review the user guide for key points. Make sure the rings are at your armpit, that the sling is open and spread out across your back, and that you are wearing the baby at your rib cage and that the sling is tight. Please visit our Resources section to find a support group near you if you would like some hands-on help. Chances are you’ll find an experienced babywearer that can help you. I’m having trouble adjusting it. Make sure the rails aren’t twisted when they go through the rings. Loosen it a little and open up the side edges. Make sure you can pull each side easily and independently. This should help a lot. My baby bumps his head against the rings in the upright facing-in snuggle position. You can tuck or wrap some of the tail fabric around the rings to cushion them. No fancy technique – just put some fabric between the rings and your baby and that should help. When I put stuff in the pocket, it bangs into my leg. The solution is to tie the sling to the rings to pull the pocket up. My baby seems cramped / too big for the sling. Babies 5 – 30 lbs can be carried in a sling, so perhaps you need to try a different position. Bear in mind that the baby does need to be snug in order to safe and you won’t find it comfortable if you wear it loosely. Try an upright position if your baby is fussy in a cradle position. If this doesn't work, take a break and try it again when your baby is old enough for a Hip Carry position.
Can you diagnose my problems by email? If you are still having trouble or are not comfortable, send us digital photo of yourself in the sling and we will do our best to help. If you’re in LA, we can help you in person. Contact us for personalized help. Is it comfortable to use a sling? Everybody is different. If you’re carrying your baby in your arms or hip, then a sling should feel more comfortable than without using a carrier since the sling distributes the weight around your torso and adds support. You might feel a little fatigued if you wear the baby for hours on one side or walk vigorously for a 30 minutes or more. If you are healthy and don’t have back issues, then during normal daily use it shouldn’t be uncomfortable. Be sure not to slouch or otherwise compensate when you're wearing the sling. Try to alternate sides. It will take your back some adjusting to get used to the extra weight- and that'll be true no matter what baby-carrying device you use. Make sure the sling isn't hanging too low or it probably will ache and cause you to slouch. Also make sure the sling is spread out over your shoulder and across your back and not twisted. I think anytime you carry a baby 5 - 25 lbs for a long time, no matter what, you will ache somewhere at some point, even while using the fanciest backpack. So if you start to ache, take it off and take a break. The sling is probably most comfortable when you're using it for gentle walks, around the house, at restaurants, and while during errands. Make sure you are wearing the sling correctly and standing up straight! Please review our User Guide section to ensure proper usage. If you plan on going for long hikes or walks with a heavy baby, then a backpack or back-type carrier that distributes the weight evenly on your hips is probably going to be more comfortable. But for everyday light use, the sling should feel comfortable and be easy to use. The Posh Papoose® baby sling is essential for travel! Some of our models come with nylon rings, which don't trigger metal detectors, but the security guards may make you take it off anyway. You can order the sling with no side rails or no padding at all if you want something totally non-bulky for travel. You can use an unpadded sling as a toddler tether in the airport by wrapping it around your child’s body. With your child in the Posh Papoose®, you can carry your child through the airport while pushing a stroller and hauling a rolling piece of luggage. You can stick your ID and boarding pass in the sling's pocket and have it handy for all the times you're going to have to whip it out. You can go in and out of bathrooms and shops with the baby strapped safely to your torso. I nurse my baby to sleep on airplanes in the sling and it offers the baby a discreet hideaway. I also find it easy to carry the baby in a sling onto the plane while carrying all my extra bags. If your baby sleeps in a carseat on the plane, you can use the sling as a blanket, a pillow, a changing station, or a shade to block light. If you're traveling alone, The Posh Papoose™ is truly necessary for sane, reduced-stress travel. I can't decide which one to get. Can you help? Call or email us and we’ll be happy to offer advice. We can also offer discounts on multiple purchases. Contact us for more information. Can I carry anything in it besides my baby? Aside from a pacifier or little teething toy, you should only carry your child in the main compartment of the sling. You can, however, carry some basic essentials in the pocket provided on the hanging tail part of the sling. Remember, your baby will get warm from your body heat and activity, so you don’t need to wrap the baby in extra clothes or blankets, unless it’s really cold! Can I cook while I'm wearing my baby in the Posh Papoose®? We do not recommend cooking while wearing your baby. You don’t want your baby near splattering, boiling hot substances, knives, scissors, hot ovens, dials, flames, hot water, spigots, etc. and little hands like to reach out into hot things, get in the way of knives, or try to turn oven dials, etc. Can I wear it while I go bike riding, jogging, roller-skating, mountain climbing, etc? The Posh Papoose® Baby Sling is not designed for sports or other activities more strenuous than gentle walking. There are lots of great products out there designed for safe use during sporty activities with your baby. But there's no reason why you can't take your Posh Papoose™ sling with you for when you take a break and take a walk after a vigorous bike ride or jog. Do you sell slings for dogs? Believe it or not, this is a question we hear quite often. I don’t know much about carrying a dog in a sling, though I have seen them in bike baskets and strollers! I think there are some very nice products on the market made especially for carrying small dogs. What other stuff do you make? Have you ever considering making….? We offer the best reversible sun hat for kids & moms, plush blankets, adorable Diaper & Wipes Pouches and other items. Check our site often and/or subscribe to our newsletter for more news. How long will it take to ship once I place my order? We ship in-stock orders 2 – 3x per week. One or two times a year, we take a family vacation and our office is closed during that time. Order may also be delayed by a day or two if we are out of the office due to illness, trade shows, holidays, etc. We try to post a note on the website alerting customers if we are out of the office a week or longer. If an item needs to be made, it will take up to 2 – 4 weeks and we will email you with an estimated ship date. Please read our Customer Service section for more information. We will do our best to expedite your order if you let us know you are in a rush. If we have the item in stock and you are willing to pay for rush shipping for an overnight or 2-day service, we can try to arrange it, depending on our schedule. Please contact us and we'll let you know if we can do it in the time frame you require as well as a cost estimate. We ship from Los Angles and most slings weigh <2 lbs in a box, so you can estimate shipping at the various shipping company’s websites before contacting us if you like. Can you ship internationally? Yes, we get many orders from Canada, Europe, and Asia. All international orders are shipped via USPS Global Priority. This is the best value and the easiest method. They say it takes 4 – 7 business days once shipped, but we have found it can take up to 2 weeks from LA to the UK, for example. Also, the postal service seems to reuse tracking numbers, so don’t be alarmed if you try to track it and it tells you it left from Hartford, Conn three months ago. What is your return policy? Will you donate to our silent auction/ fundraiser / non-profit organization? We receive many requests from many worthy organizations. While we can’t donate to everyone, we will consider reasonable requests that explain the purpose of your organization and some information regarding the demographics of your members. I'm a quilter / home sewer. Can you sell me yardage and fabric scraps? Yes, we often have small pieces and remnants that are perfect for textile artists and quilters. Contact us with your interests and we'll let you know what's available. Will you consider selling other products on your website? Yes, we are looking to expand our offerings and become a full service online boutique of stylish, well-designed products for parents and kids, with a special focus on hand-made designer items. Yes, and we are seeking to expand into more. Please see our Store Locations to see if Posh Papoose® is sold near you. Tell your favorite boutiques about us! If you own a store, please email us and we will email you our wholesale information. Are any of your fabrics organic? We try to source organic or eco-friendly materials whenever possible. We will clearly label those products that are made with these materials. We have found some sustainable cotton t-shirts and are trying to convince our fabric suppliers to convert to organic dyes and fibers. We are open to resource suggestions! Please read our Environmental Policy for more details on our efforts. At the moment we do not, but if we do open a retail store someday, we will make a note on our website and send word to our newsletter subscribers. Do you make everything yourself? I made the original prototypes but I do not sew the products myself. I rely on a few talented people who sew beautifully, contribute creatively, live nearby, and are great to work with. Rest assured all our products are sweatshop-free, locally produced, and hand crafted by very lovely people who are fairly compensated. You can read all about our team in the About Us section of this site. I love my Posh Papoose™. Can I send you a photo and positive feedback? We love photos and feedback from customers. We'd be thrilled to post both to the website, with your permission, and we will offer you 10% off any future order before shipping. Please also post a review at www.thebabywearer.com for us! I gave away all of your business cards, will you mail me more so I can distribute them to people that ask about the sling? Yes please! We really appreciate the word of mouth recommendations that have helped our business grow. We like to show our appreciation to customers that help us out. Email us for more information. Most questions can be answered in the Papoose Guide or in other sections of this website. Please email us if you have any other questions. |
